Choosing A Pool Service

Five Things To Consider Before Hiring A Pool Service

Mr Clean Pools - Kids in the pool

So you have finally decided to hire a pool service company to clean and maintain your swimming pool. This is actually one of the best decisions you will make as a swimming pool owner. A good pool service company will save you money on pool maintenance in the long run, and more importantly, free up your weekends! Who wouldn’t rather be spending their weekends relaxing by the pool instead of doing the pool man’s job.

You go to Google and type in “pool service.”

It can be a little confusing and overwhelming to separate the true swimming pool professional from the rest of the not so professional types out there. I’d like to share a few things to keep in mind before you decide.

#1 Are they licensed?

If a pool service does not have a business license, DON”T LET THEM IN YOUR YARD! Now, this probably doesn’t weed out too many pool service companies you will find on Google, but you must verify that the pool service you hire is licensed. This is the first step a pool service must take if they are truly professional.

#2 Are they insured?

If a pool service does not have liability insurance, keep looking. Pool maintenance and pool cleaning may not seem risky, but, accidents can happen. When the cost of a repair is going to be much higher than the amount of profit your pool makes them in a year, the fly by night outfits will be heading for the exits! Liability insurance is mandatory! Don’t forget to verify that the coverage is current.

#3 Will they provide high quality Customer Service?

Did they answer the phone, and did they show up on time? It seems obvious, but the service you receive will never be better than your first meeting. Pool service companies are on their best behavior when they are trying to earn your business. You should hold them to a very high standard in this first service call. If they did not answer the phone or promptly return your call now, just imagine how hard it will be to get them to come out when it might not be convenient for them. Customer service must be their first priority. If it’s not, keep looking.

#4 Do they look professional?

A professional pool service will have estimate forms and business cards that look professional. When they answer the phone did they say “Hello”, or was it something more professional like, “Thank you for calling, Mr. Clean Pools, how may I help you?” Did they answer all of your questions? Or did they seem to be new at this? You want to hire a swimming pool professional. This will ensure you are getting the best pool service, and the best, most current information about swimming pool water sanitization, and equipment selection. Your family’s health depends on it.

#5 Are their prices competitive?

Let’s talk about cost vs. value. If you pay $X a month to a swimming pool service, when the going rate is $X + $20, are you happy? Let’s see, saving $20 a month times 12 months, that’s a savings of $240 a year. But how much, if any, did you really save? Stay away from the low bidder pool service, it may cost you more in the long run. You want to hire a pool service that will do maintenance first and repairs when needed. The last thing you want to do is hire a pool service that will overlook maintenance so they can do the costly repairs. Ask your swimming pool maintenance company for a list of prices for common items. The cheap pool service companies will have a very long list of nickel and dime charges that quickly eat away that $240 “savings”. This is by design, don’t fall for the low bid!

Now you are ready to go out and find your new pool service company. We hope you’ll choose Mr. Clean Pools.
